About us

We are the Voice of Mediterranean Rivers and Wetlands

The Mediterranean region is on the brink of an environmental catastrophy due to years of human activity with little regard for wetlands and rivers. We are already witnessing four dangerous phenomenon:

1. An increase in disasters, such as flooding and droughts.
2. The water and soil quality is compromised.
3. Loss of biodiversity; extinction of species, and decreased resilience of natural ecosystems.
4. A disturbance to local economies as well as a loss of social benefits in wetland and river supported areas.

This is a dire situation that requires immediate attention and action in order to protect this vital region and all who depend on it.

Change cannot happen without a voice, and it is our belief that it is through our voice, and the collective action of many, that we can make a real difference. By engaging the public and raising awareness of the importance of healthy Mediterranean wetlands and river basins – ecologically, economically, and for the environment – we hope to shift support in favor of conserving, rehabilitating, and protecting these habitats. In turn, this collective voice will pressure politicians to act and advance in the policy agenda.

Our Alliance inspires communities to work together and provides them with the skills they need to protect and advocate for rivers and wetlands. Join us, and let’s make a difference!

More about us

Mediterranean Alliance for Wetlands (MAW) is a partnership of environmental NGOs and research organizations that strengthens the role of civil society in the protection of wetlands in the Mediterranean. Our goal is to raise the profile of wetlands in society and to support policymakers, managers and other civil society members to develop climate-resilient, inclusive solutions.

MAW maintains its autonomy through its own governance scheme in order to stay flexible and inclusive of other partnerships and consortiums with the same goal of protecting nature in the Mediterranean and improving the livelihoods of local communities. The Alliance collaborates closely with the Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory and the MedWet Scientific and Technical Network to further its reach and effectiveness.. We are more than 30 organisations working in the Mediterranean and developing joint actions around three main themes: knowledge and innovation, communication and policy

How We Work

We work locally, nationally, and regionally to convene stakeholders, identify shared conservation priorities, and build sustainable strategies. We are the Voice of Wetlands: Every day, we’re mobilising civil society, educating people, and motivating them to get involved with local sustainability projects. And we will not stop until we achieve our vision of healthy Mediterranean Wetlands supporting thriving communities and abundant nature.

Below is our theory of change.
