The Azraq Wetland Reserve has become the site of the first recorded sighting of the Caspian Gull in the Azraq region. This significant occurrence was documented on October 17, 2023, by a visitor, Mr. Jason, in collaboration with the guide, Anwar El Aissami.

The Caspian Gull, primarily known for its breeding grounds around the Black and Caspian Seas, has a far-reaching migratory pattern spanning Central Asia to the northwestern regions of China. Its geographical range has expanded recently, with the bird establishing breeding sites in Poland and eastern Germany. This expansive migratory behavior sees some gulls traveling as far south as the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. In contrast, others have become common in Western Europe, appearing in countries like Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Benelux, and northern France. Britain has also observed these gulls’ arrival in small but increasing numbers.

Azraq Wetland Reserve, known for its unique biodiversity, is crucial in providing a sanctuary for migratory birds, including winter visitors like the Caspian Gull in Aqaba. The presence of this species in Azraq underscores the importance of ongoing conservation efforts and the need to maintain the ecological balance of this sensitive area. Thanks to RSCN’s efforts, many birds for which Azraq was once renowned are coming back, and special boardwalks and bird hides have been constructed to enable visitors to observe and enjoy them. Moreover, observing this bird species not only adds to the ornithological richness of the region but will also attract the attention of birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
